Pubgigs.com

real people, real music, real entertainment

For many years The Wheatsheaf in Dunstable has been a great live music venue.
Due to lack of promotion & advertising the pub went downhill & eventually ceased trading in June 2008.
A new owner has now taken the pub on but is unsure what direction to take.
Us rock nuts have persuaded him to book live bands. The 1st being The Donkeys, an excelent rock & some metal covers band who are playing on Sat the 23rd of August starting at 9pm.
2 more bands follow on the next 2 sats.
We need loads of rock fans to turn up so the new guvnor will be convinced that keeping the pub as a live rock venue is the way to go.
What say you all?

let him know pubgigs.com is there to help if needed. we can source many bands at a good price for him and only provide quality. Pubgigs live also can help with promotional work if needed.

Thanks for that Phillip. I will advise the landlord. Colin.

Are they still booking acts? One of my bands Red Soxx might be suitable - www.myspace.com/redsoxxband - and I am always keen to support local boozers who keep music live!

We would equally be keen to talk to him if he's interested in booking more stuff

Hi ,
ive played the pub many times with my band fourplay , we had some really good nights at the wheatsheaf ,
but i must point out that landlords at 90% of pubs, never put up posters that you provide , no adverts in local papers , no info on lemonrock or other ,sites only down to the bands to add details , some places still advertising last weeks gigs on chalk boards out side on the night you are playing (black swan shefford) a week out of date THEN THE LANDLORD SAYS ON THE NIGHT , CANT UNDERSTAND WERE THE PEOPLE ARE????

when you play 50 odd gigs per year , landlords cant expect your mates and family to arrive at every gig , its not the bands job to bring a crowd

so in the long term what do you expect with no self promotion of your bisiness and now most landlords are making 30p per pint profit if they are lucky

sorry to maon on , landlords really need to wake up in this very hard long credit crunch if thay want to carry on business
the new guy at the wheatsheaf((dave) suffers from the above , and he only wants to pay bands £50 - theres your answer

Andy, you are so absolutely spot on about landlords but they are our boss so you can't tell them. We do this as part of our living and do 100 - 150 gigs a year and you're absolutely right that the attitude of the landlord can be key to the whole thing working. We experience the same thing, landlords not putting your posters up, not advertising it in papers and web, yeh and the chalk board, but just as important as that is just getting the staff to mention it to punters during the week and get them excited " Oh we've got (insert band name) here on Saturday night, that should be a good night, are you coming down, should be a few."
We often turn up at a venus and people are going, "oh is there a band on tonight?"
But some landlords are doing the right thing and thats why they have busy live music nights and thriving businesses.

And your mate at the Wheatsheaf is only gonna get crap bands for £50 and therefore the live music nights will fail anyway.

yes mate , you are spot on - i must say that steve at the Norman King in Dunstable just around the corner from the wheatsheaf , makes all hes own posters , flyers and really trys hard to scream and shout about his fantastic pub , and it works. all ways busy when we play at that venue. hes done his home work 4 week in advance of a band playing at his venue.

there is some really good business people out there running pubs that are busy during the credit crunch , its no secret how they are doing it , you only have to walk through the door to see it working.

Yeh,and alot of of`em dont move the furniture as well!!!!
The pub we played at last Sat.was sent posters by e mail and was reminded a couple of times that they were sent and guess what? Yep no posters up.He said he doesnt go on his PC much.If thats the case why ask for them to be sent by e mail???
And then the wonder why the crowds dont arrive?
